According to Roger Clemens, Dr.P.H., adjunct professor of pharmacology at the USC School of Pharmacy, liquid detoxification regimens not only do nothing to eliminate fat-soluble chemicals, they also can have painful and dangerous side effects. Colonics and laxatives can lead to fainting, muscle cramps and dehydration. In addition, high-volume consumption of liquids can cause hyponatremia, or low sodium in the blood, says Clemens. Rapidly progressing hyponatremia can cause swelling of the brain, resulting in nausea, vomiting, headache and possibly even coma.
